Tom Young

Tom joined us in April 2018 as a Solicitor, specialising in property and affairs deputyships under the Court of Protection.

Tom qualified in 2014 and has a wealth of pre- and post-qualification experience in Court of Protection practice and procedure.  Tom was recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in the Legal 500 2017, where he was identified as “an up-and-coming star in the world of Court of Protection”.

Tom’s experience in this field includes:

  • Management of professional deputyships, including cases with ongoing high value litigation claims, either as sole deputy or alongside a member of the client’s family
  • Contentious Court of Protection work, including financial safeguarding, dispute resolution and contested hearings at all levels up to the Court of Appeal
  • Applications to change deputy or to vary a deputyship order, such as to make a gift or purchase a property
  • Cross border experience of deputyship clients with lives or assets outside England and Wales
  • Applications to appoint and advice to lay deputies, including dealing with investigations by the Public Guardian
  • Statutory Will applications, contentious and otherwise
  • Applications to discharge a client from the Court of Protection
  • Support and Training to Local Authorities
  • The provision of evidence on deputyship costs in litigated claims

Tom is passionate about protecting the rights and promoting the interests of vulnerable children and adults.  He has extensive expertise dealing with cases involving entitlement to statutory care funding, having been heavily involved in all stages of Tinsley v Manchester City Council & Ors [2017] EWCA Civ 1704 (01 November 2017). The Tinsley case concluded with the Court of Appeal unanimously dismissing the Local Authority’s appeal against an order stating that it was obliged to provide after-care services.  Tinsley has brought further clarity in respect of safeguarding the rights of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

Tom has always been committed to helping those in need.  He worked on a number of death penalty cases in America whilst he was training to become a Solicitor.  In addition to his role at Price Slater Gawne, Tom has volunteered with Manchester University Legal Advice Centre, Manchester Free Legal Help and a Street Law Project with BPP University called ‘With Law in Mind’.

In his spare time, Tom enjoys playing and watching sport, with a particular interest in cricket. His favourite cricket ground in the world is the Kensington Oval in Barbados.  Despite England’s turbulent performances, he still enjoys spending his free time following their struggles.

Who is talking about professional deputies?

“Tom Young is excellent. I cannot fault his continuous efforts and expertise enough. He offers great communication and always treats our family with the utmost courtesy and professionalism. I would highly recommend him to anyone. As a family we are forever grateful, and always will be”.
Mrs R

“I have worked with Price Slater Gawne, the Court of Protection appointed Deputy team and the medical negligence team for three years. Becky Jacobs, Thomas Young and Jade Price are open and welcoming with their clients, they speak the “language” our clients understand and will adapt conversations to ensure the focus remains on the clients’ goals and needs.
The team are dedicated, highly experienced, professional, and approachable, with a drive to ensure the best outcome for their clients. PSG ensure they are integral to the wider (multidisciplinary team) team working ‘with’ their clients rather than in isolation. They demonstrate effective partnership working, through agreed vision, trust, and mutual respect”.
Kate Barron, Clinical Case Manager

“I have had the pleasure of working in partnership with both Tom Young and Jade Price from Price Slater Gawne in my role as a Brain Injury Case Manager. I have found them both to be forward thinking problem solvers with an excellent depth of knowledge and understanding of the needs of individuals who have suffered brain injuries along with the complex issues that families can face.  They ensure we at all times keep our clients and families at the centre of what we do.”
Steve High, Sea Change ABI

“I’ve worked with Tom for a number of years and find his approach to client care to be calm, professional and experienced.  He provides excellent support to vulnerable clients and their families.  He has a thorough understanding of local authority funding and has been instrumental in helping clients secure the funding they are entitled.  Tom is a safe pair of hands for any client and is rightly regarded as an expert in his area”
Chris Gardner – Investment Director – Personal Injury and Court of Protection Specialist

“I have worked with Tom on a number of cases where he acts as professional deputy for property and affairs. Tom is incredibly knowledgeable in his field. He has a fantastic relationship with his clients and their close family, clearly built off an in depth understanding of their needs. He is personable and approachable. An absolute pleasure to work with.”
Robert Farnworth, Brown Shipley

“Changing my mother’s deputy over to Price Slater Gawne was not a decision I took lightly, but rather one that I gave significant time, thought and consideration. – After changing deputy to them, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

My initial research into deputyship provided a raft of results but having come across an article on changing deputy by Tom Young, I was provided with the answers to many of my questions all in one place. I was then able to make use of the 24/7 online chat function offered by the company; a service which meant that I could make contact with the firm at a time that was convenient to me.

I arranged a call with Tom to discuss changing deputy and our requirements of the deputyship. From the outset I was provided with transparency and a service that was truly tailored to our needs, giving full consideration to our circumstances and developing a solution accordingly. – In my mother’s case, this was the decision to establish a joint deputyship. Following this call, I had a meeting with Tom at which, I felt my options regarding my mother’s deputyship were discussed with me in a clear, concise manner. On a day to day basis now, Tom, Jade and the team ensure that I am provided with updates as required. I feel confident that I can discuss matters with them at any time.

Whilst the COVID-19 lockdown has of course raised its challenges, the same high levels of service have been delivered, and I can say without doubt that the team are focused on helping clients.

I truly believe that anyone can have a job, but blessed are those that work not only for themselves but also to help others. – I found that the Price Slater Gawne team truly want to help their clients”.
Mr H

“I desperately needed to change my deputy and I appointed Tom at Price Slater Gawne to deal with the difficult situation I was in and to take over the deputyship. Tom tackled this delicate change over very professionally and kept me updated throughout the transfer

I could not be happier with Tom at PSG being my son’s deputy. He is highly professional, prompt and supportive. The team at PSG are always at hand and always ready to help. Big thanks to Caz who is very supportive and always at hand

I would recommend Price Slater Gawne Solicitors to anyone who needs professional help”.
Mr A

“I received excellent service.  All communications and advice were clearly explained and easy to understand.  Above all, communication was always prompt as well as effective.”
Mrs H

“We made a very good decision in choosing Price Slater Gawne to represent our daughter as they supported her and our family to a very successful conclusion with her claim on the RTA she was involved in.

As we were progressing into a new phase, we were moved on to a new deputy who was more qualified for the new challenges that await our daughter and us as her family.  Once we met Tom we liked him straight away, he had a calmness and confidence that helped us to have confidence in him.  He took to our daughter really well which was something we thought may be an issue but his ability to speak clearly and calmly really helped, he would stick to his boundaries and explained everything very honestly to her and us.

His young age makes me happy that there is longevity working with my daughter and this helps us with our fears for her future as well as my children.

I would strongly recommend working with not just Price Slater Gawne but Thomas Young in particular, his commitment to us as a family as well as the effort he puts in is a credit to himself, his family and his profession.”
