For many of us, the Christmas period is a time we look forward to, knowing that time off from studies or work will be spent with loved ones and enjoying the festivities. The picture postcard image of a Christmas together. The reality for some however is a far reach from this idyllic scene, where in fact financial pressures, consumption of alcohol / drugs and increased stress over potential lockdowns can result in increased tensions in the home and sadly in some cases will result in domestic violence. Director and Serious Injury expert lawyer Victoria Price examines the issues.

Relationships that are under strain can breakdown quickly at Christmas time, particularly in circumstances where there has been a history of violence and abuse already.

Help for those affected by domestic violence

If you are affected by domestic violence, there is support available to help you escape the situation. –  call a charity such as Refuge, call the police – get to a safe place. If you have children make sure you are all safe. Charities such as Refuge will work with you to explore your options, provide temporary accommodation and practical support to help you move forward.

There are also a number of other organisations who can provide help, support and information: here’s a good starting point https://www.gov.uk/report-domestic-abuse

Whilst it can be incredibly difficult to break this cycle, there is support available to you and people that are there to help you at every stage of this journey.

At Price Slater Gawne, we have worked with many survivors of physical, sexual and emotional abuse to help them access compensation, allowing them to access the support and treatment they require to build a better future.
